MODESTO – An early morning crash claimed the life of one person and sent another to the hospital Saturday.
The crash was reported shortly after 2:30am on the northbound lanes of Highway 99 near the Hammett Road off ramp. Early reports indicate three vehicles were involved in the crash, with one overturned into the center guardrail trapping the occupants.
One trapped person was extricated from the overturned vehicle and rushed to the hospital by ambulance, a second was pronounced deceased at the scene. Firefighters used heavy rescue tools to remove the person from the vehicle.
The crash closed the fast lane of Highway 99, and scattered debris across the roadway. Stuffed animals, clothing and shoes could be seen around the crash site.
Early indications suggest the crash may have been the result of a hit and run. Officers searched the area for any other involved vehicles with visible damage, but by 3:30am had not located any.
Anyone with information regarding this crash is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol.
