A little bit about Fair Oaks..
Fair Oaks, CA was founded in 1844 as part of the original Mexican Land Grant, Rancho San Juan. The area we now know as Fair Oaks was first developed in 1895 as a Sunset Colony of the Howard and Wilson Publishing Company of Chicago. A few years later the Fair Oaks Bridge was built. Fair Oaks started to grow rapidly after the completion of the Fair Oaks Bridge and the railroad line. The growth of agriculture business attracted many other businesses to the area, by 1906 the town already had a post office, hotel, blacksmith shop, lumber yard, pharmacy, bank, cemetery, newspaper, and grocery stores. Throughout the years Fair Oaks developed into the thriving town it is today. Fair Oaks has a number of retail businesses, schools, and a mix of suburban and semi-rural neighborhoods. Fair Oaks takes pride in preserving its small town identity.

Perhaps one of the most popular places to visit in Fair Oaks is the Fair Oaks Bridge. The Fair Oaks Bridge goes across the American River connecting to the American Parkway Trail along the lower banks of the American River. The current Fair Oaks bridge is actually the 3rd one to be built. The first bridge was built in 1901, it was destroyed by floods in 1907. A temporary bridge was built in May of 1907, the new permanent Fair Oaks bridge was built in 1909. The bridge was closed to traffic in 1967 and opened up to pedestrians in 1973 which is the bridge that still stands until this day. The Fair Oaks Bridge was once how Sacramento connected to the citrus farms on the other side, now it is a pedestrian/ bicycle only bridge used for visitors to enjoy the view of the American River and its surroundings.

With Fair Oaks being right along the American River, rafting tends to be a very popular activity during the summer months. The river access point for the best place to start at for a day of rafting is actually in Fair Oaks. About half way through your float you will come across the San Juan rapids which is an adrenaline pumping part of anyones rafting trip. These floats lat anywhere from 3-4 hours, they are a nice way to spend your summer days!

The town center of Fair Oaks is called Old Fair Oaks Village. The Veterans Memorial Amphitheater is located in this part of town. Events that take place here include the Fair Oaks Theater Festival, Fair Oaks Fiesta and Car Show, and the annual Fair Oaks Chicken Festival. The Fair Oaks History Center is also located in the town center. In the Fair Oaks History Center there are artifacts and displays dating from the early 1900s from the development of Fair Oaks.
